Eldest is a sequel to the bestselling book, Eragon. The well-known characters in this book are Eragon, Roran and Nasuada. Eragon always has his dragon Saphira by his side. The other characters are Arya, the daughter of the elven queen and elf warrior orik, Ajihad, the leader of the Varden, Nasuada, who replaces her father Ajihad when he dies, Roran, Eragon's cousin and Angela the herbalist. Some new characters are introduced in Eldest, like Oromis and his dragon Glaedr, Murtagh, Thorn, who is Murtagh's dragon, Galbatorix and the Ra'zac.

In this book, there is darkness and despair where evil seems to reign. Eragon and his dragon Saphira have just rescued the rebel state from annihilation by the powerful forces of King Galbatorix of Empire. Christopher Paolini was born on November 17, 1983 in Southern California. He has lived most of his life in Paradise Valley, Montana with his parents and younger sister, Angela. As a child, he often wrote short stories and poems, made frequent trips to the library, and read widely. The idea of Eragon began as the daydreams of a teen. Christopher's love for the magic of stories led him to craft a novel that he would enjoy reading. The project began as a hobby, a personal challenge; he never intended it to be published. He was fifteen when he wrote the first draft of Eragon.
