A curious child grows to be a wise grown-up. An adventurous child grows to be a fearless grown-up. A happy child grows to be a confident grown-up. Books build all three qualities. Books fill you up without the calories. Books get you to travel, hassle-free. No visas, tickets or hotel bookings needed. Books make movies inside your mind, so be comfortably seated. Whether you’re sprawled on the floor or up in a tree. It’s that good old book that sets you free. A book at hand is your ride to a magic land. Books are friends whether you smile or frown. Slow books or fast, they never let you down. Tumble into a book and see, how stories can fire up your dreams! Shikhandin

Profile

Shikhandin writes for children as well as grownups. She hopes to meet a real live ghost one day. Wizards, witches and unicorns too. She wishes humans had long prehensile tails.

Shikhandin is the nom de plume of an Indian writer, who writes for both grown-ups and children.

She started writing poetry as a child and continues to do so. But she published her first story only in 2001. By that time, she had stepped down from her career in advertising and media to raise her two children.

Along the way, Shikhandin has had almost a hundred publications (short stories, poems and articles) in online and print magazines, as well as anthologies. Notably in Asia Literary Review (Hong Kong), Eclectica (USA), Per Contra (USA), Markings (Scotland), Himmal (Kathmandu), Flash: The International Short-Short Story Magazine (UK), Kitaab (Singapore), The Nth Position (UK), Scroll.in (India), Mascara Literary Review (Australia), Cha: An Asian Literary Journal (Hong Kong), Stony Thursday (Ireland), The Little Magazine (India), Out of Print (India), Sybil's Garage (USA), Pushing Out the Boat (Scotland), South: A Journal of Poetry (UK), Off the Coast (USA), Etchings (Australia), Going Down Swinging (Australia), to name a few.

Her first novel was published (under her real name) in 2014, and two collections of short stories after that, for grown-ups, including ‘Immoderate Men’ published by Speaking Tiger, which is her first book as Shikhandin. Her first children’s story was published in the Puffin Book of Magic Stories for Eight Year Olds, and reprinted in a text book by Oxford University Press. Her first book for children, ‘Vibhuti Cat,’ (with Shubham Lakhera as the illustrator) was published by Duckbill in 2018.

Like most writers, Shikhandin loves to read. She loves science fiction as well as literary. She reads a poem every day, to keep the doctor away. As a child, she always made it a point to be on excellent terms with the librarians at her school and the town club. Even today, she’d rather read than watch TV or go to the movies. She grew up with many animals, mostly domestic, but one or two were rather wild. She doesn’t live with any at the moment, so she talks to stray dogs, cats, cows, horses and goats whenever she gets the chance. She used to rescue animals until recently, and rehome them. She is waiting to settle down somewhere, closer to the ground, and hopefully not in any city, so that she can spend her ‘autumn years’ with animals and birds, trees and butterflies.
