This sly and humorous novel by Fakir Mohan Senapati?one of the pioneering spirits of modern Indian literature and an early activist in the fight against the destruction of native Indian languages?is both a literary work and a historical document. Set in Orissa in the 1830s, Six Acres and a Third provides a unique ‘view from below’ of Indian village life under colonial rule. This graceful translation faithfully conveys the rare and compelling account of how the more unsavory aspects of colonialism affected life in rural India.

Author : Fakir Mohan Senapati

Fakir Mohan Senapati (January 13, 1843-June 14, 1918) was an Indian novelist, short story writer, poet, philosopher and social reformer. Due to his contribution in establishing the distinct identity of Odia, a language spoken in the Indian state of Odisha, he is regarded as the father of modern Odia literature. His four novels, written between 1897 and 1915, reflect the socio-cultural conditions of Odisha during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Written in 1898, his short story "Rebati" is widely recognized as the first Odia short story.
